City Saplings
Fridays 9:00AM-1:00PM
4-5.5 year olds
Part of seeing children as capable citizens of our world means that we also want to be out in the world with them. In addition to being in natural spaces, we believe children should be a part of other spaces in our city. Through our City Saplings program, our oldest children (4 by September and potty trained) are invited to join us for adventures away from our home base in Joaquin Miller Park.
This program has a secondary drop off and pick up location around Lake Merritt. From here our group will explore nature areas, gardens, museums, and other spaces we have a collective interest in. As with our other work, this will be child led and may look different from year to year depending on the interests of the children. Beyond exploring new spaces, this group will focus on how to safely move through a more urban landscape, use public transportation, and how to be respectful in shared spaces such as museums and libraries.
Our teachers are passionate about this piece of the program as it also touches on an important piece of the Reggio Emilia philosophy: making children visible. We believe that children are active participants in their community as such have rights to access these beautiful shared public spaces.
